Course Information

This course is designed for existing fossil fuel plumbing and heating engineers, aiming to expand their proficiency in the installation of heat pumps. The course aims for candidates to demonstrate understanding and competence in installing various heat pump systems, covering operational characteristics, components, selection principles, system design, safety regulations, and industry standards. Upon the successful completion of both core and specialized technology modules, participants will be thoroughly equipped to undertake the installation, commissioning, and handover of specific heat pump technologies. Finally, this course is recognised as a demonstration of competence for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

BPEC Heat Pump Systems Course Content

  • Sizing, selecting, installing, commissioning, and handing over air and ground source heat pump systems.
  • Planning and installing air and ground source heat pumps.
  • Commissioning and handing over air and ground source heat pumps.
  • Inspecting, servicing, and maintaining air and ground source heat pump systems.

Entry Requirements

The training/assessment course is targeting learners with the following background:

  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • A Heating Installer with minimum of 3 years’ experience installing wet central heating systems (evidenced either by manufactures courses certification or Gas safe Register, OFTEC, MCS, or HETAS registration).

AND (if not included in the above qualification)

  • Water Regulations/Water Byelaws

Assessment & Certification

Assessment

This classroom-based course awards a nationally recognised qualification upon passing multiple-choice exams and task-based controlled assessments. There are both theoretical and practical elements to all training and assessments.

Certification

Every candidate will receive a certificate and photo ID competency card, valid for 5 years.
