Preparing to Teach | Level 3 Award in Education and Training

This week we will be looking at how you can get into teaching with our Level 3 Award in Education and Training, what it entails, a testimonial from one of our own and what you need to do to help you prepare to teach.

Award in Education and Training course overview

This is a 5-day course that will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to teach your own subject. The course will help you build and understand specific roles and responsibilities relating to the planning and delivery of inclusive training sessions with constructive and developmental feedback. You will cover a range of topics including maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment, relationships between teachers and other teaching professionals and feedback. Once you have successfully completed the course, you will receive 2 certificates; the qualification in Level 3 Award in Education and Training, and a list of the units in the qualification. This is a great practical course which has been designed so that newly qualified trainers can deliver high quality training to colleagues, peers, customers and employers.

Matt’s story

Matt Fletcher, our very own Training and Consultancy Instructor, has completed the course and is now qualified to teach others a wide range of subjects.

Image of Matt FletcherBefore progressing onto the Level 3 Award in Education and Training course, Matt initially joined ESS as an Enrolment Officer, delivering profiling sessions for funded NVQ Qualifications offered by Essential Site Skills. For Matt, taking the course was the start of the process to get out and deliver training, but also to build confidence in his abilities.

The course is a big part of both personal and professional development. The organisational and preparation skills the course teaches helps improve the approach to all work tasks, not just training.

In terms of career progression, the course gives the ability and knowledge to create lesson plans and the day to day delivery of Health and Safety training.

Being L3 AET qualified, Matt is now a Training and Consultancy Instructor and has gained accreditation through Fit2Fit to become a qualitative Face Fit Tester and completed his training to become a RTITB instructor for Counterbalance Fork Lift Trucks and MEWPs. The L3 AET course and the trainer experience became a huge benefit to achieving these qualifications.

Matt now delivers a multitude of courses for Essential Site Skills including;

Abrasive Wheels Awareness, Tower Crane Rescue, Casualty Packaging – Work at Height, Davit Arm, Face Fit Testing, Fire Marshall/Warden training and these are only to mention only a few. (Need any training? Search here).

We asked Matt about his experience and how it has benefited his career since finishing;

Get into teaching with the Level 3 AET training course

The course has been designed as an introduction into teaching for anyone who already works in education or would like to be involved with the further education and skills sector but is open to anybody. We accept anyone from Further Education (FE) Colleges, Independent Training Providers and/or Local Authorities.  We train people from all backgrounds, so whether you’re a florist, an accountant, a chef or even a pilot, this course is ideal to achieve a nationally recognised qualification in teaching adults.

Hoping to follow in Matt's footsteps, Liam Moore, one of our enrolment officers, has just completed the practical elements of the Level 3 Award in Education and Training course.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the whole course and its content. It was great to get an insight and gain an understanding of how to deliver training effectively by ensuring that learners are engaged. I definitely achieved what I wanted out of the course, gaining new skills and knowledge of how to structure lessons. My favourite part of the course was creating a presentation on a subject of my choice and then delivering it as a Microteach.” - Liam Moore

What are the entry requirements for a L3 AET course?

We do advise that you have a specific subject and hold relevant qualifications and/or experience within that subject as it is an introductory, knowledge-based teaching qualification. We also advise that you have a minimum of Level 2 in English, mathematics and ICT or equivalent. If you do not hold these qualifications, you must record your development needs and we will agree an action plan to address. Once you have your certificate, it is valid forever. As long as you are at least 19 years of age on the first day of training, there are no other formal requirements. While it is not a requirement for you to renew this qualification, we do recommend that you keep up to date with current practice in teaching and learning through participating in regular personal development opportunities.
