What is NEBOSH?

Let’s start with the basics; NEBOSH stands for the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health.

NEBOSH is a globally recognised provider of health, safety and environmental qualifications, currently celebrating their 40th anniversary. In that time over 400,000 people have gained NEBOSH qualifications across 132 countries.

Why choose a NEBOSH course?

NEBOSH is a highly respected, globally recognised name in the world of Health & Safety. Established in the industry as a reliable source of quality education, their training creates a culture of Health & Safety competency. A NEBOSH certification provides confidence to learners, employers and governments that you take Health & Safety seriously. The organisation has a particularly strong reputation in the UK where it has been recognised as an awarding body by:

  • Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)
  • Sector Skills Council (SSC)
  • Standards Setting Body (SSB)

This means you can be sure these courses offer the most up-to-date industry standard information.

What NEBOSH Courses do ESS offer?

Here at ESS we offer a variety of NEBOSH accredited courses, including:

But which NEBOSH course is right for you? Let’s breakdown the different options:

NEBOSH Safety Simplified

ESS are proud to present the new NEBOSH Safety Simplified course. As the name suggests, this course is a streamlined but thorough course designed for everyday businesses, in any sector. If you are concerned that you don’t hold the necessary skills or job position to undergo Health & Safety training, then this course is ideal for you. It is a great entry point for anyone interested in improving their knowledge of workplace Health & Safety.

Utilising innovative techniques such as Augmented Reality to aid the learning process, this 3-day course covers:

  • The importance of Health and Safety
  • How to undertake Health and Safety Risk Assessments
  • Handling common workplace hazards
  • How to help prevent the repeated accidents
  • Why inspections and audits matter

But wait a second, what’s Augmented Reality?

For those not up-on the latest technology, Augmented Reality is an interactive experience in which users are provided computer-generated information as if it’s in the real world via a headset. This information ranges from sights, sounds and many other senses. How will this be used during the course? Well, that would ruin the surprise! But Augmented Reality really opens-up a whole world of possibilities in Health & Safety training and gives participants a whole new way of practical learning.

NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

The General Certificate is aimed at managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. It’s a more in-depth course than Safety Simplified to suit the needs of those who oversee some form of Health & Safety management. It covers the main health and safety requirements in the UK broken down into:

  • Health and safety management
  • How to control workplace hazards
  • Applying health and safety management in your workplace

This qualification has recently undergone some changes as well. After a long period of consultation with clients, NEBOSH have updated this certificate to have a greater focus on risk assessment and a more hands-on approach to learning. This is reflected in the changes to their exams, which are now more practical and reflective of learner’s day-to-day lives at work. For more information on these changes, why not visit the NEBOSH website.

NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction

The Construction Certificate is designed for supervisors and managers who oversee work in the construction industry.  It covers much of the same content as the General Certificate but is tailored towards the specifics of construction work. As well as the health and safety aspects covered in the General Certificate, this qualification also creates awareness of risk management and building an effective safety culture in construction work sites. More information can be found here.

This is a replacement qualification for the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety.

How long does a NEBOSH qualification take?

The length of time qualification takes to achieve will depend upon which specific course you are planning on enrolling on:

  • Safety Simplified, 3 days
  • General Certificate, 10 days
  • Construction Health & Safety, 15 days

All the above include time for exams. ESS also offer in-company training for all courses in order to minimise disruption to your organisation.

How do you get a NEBOSH certificate?

In most cases, participants will be asked to complete a multi-format exam and a practical assessment. A pass must be achieved on both sections to complete the training. Once learners have passed, they will be issued with a NEBOSH accredited certificate. Learners on the Safety Simplified course will receive an e-certificate, physical certificates are awarded to those completing either of the other courses.

How long is a NEBOSH certificate valid for?

Forever!

One of the best aspects of NEBOSH courses is that the certification never expires. The thorough training learners will receive will save you time and money in not having to retrain staff at regular intervals. However, this shouldn’t be the end of your learning. Given the ever-changing nature of health and safety, it is vital that even once learners have their qualification, they keep up-to-date with all the new changes in the field. NEBOSH consistently update their qualifications to keep in line with the latest policy, procedure and best practise.
