Why the New EUSR Products for Drinking Water Course Is Essential for Everyone in the Supply Chain

As the UK ramps up investment in its water infrastructure, training and compliance are under the spotlight like never before. The newly launched EUSR “Products for Drinking Water course is already gaining attention across the industry, and for good reason.

With Ofwat’s AMP8 investment cycle committing a record-breaking £104 billion between 2025 and 2030, the engineering construction workforce in water treatment is set to grow by nearly 50%. But with this growth comes increased scrutiny, higher standards, and a clear expectation: everyone involved in delivering clean water must be trained, compliant, and accountable.

Understanding the EUSR Products for Drinking Water Scheme

The Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) developed this course in collaboration with UK water companies and key industry stakeholders. It aims to raise awareness of the legal requirements under Regulation 31 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations, which governs all materials, chemicals, and products that come into contact with drinking water.

This half-day, face-to-face course is designed for:

  • Operatives
  • Supervisors
  • Managers
  • Procurement teams
  • Consultants
  • Supply chain partners

On successful completion, delegates are registered with EUSR for a period of three years.

Why This Training Is Critical in 2025 and Beyond

The stakes have never been higher. In recent years, Ofwat has issued over £168 million in fines for water quality breaches. These incidents have highlighted just how critical it is to ensure that every product used in contact with drinking water is approved, traceable, and correctly managed.

Whether you’re installing components on site or approving them from a desk, you have a responsibility to help protect public health.

Course Breakdown: The 8 Key Areas of Compliance

The course includes eight modules, each focusing on a different aspect of compliance and best practice:

  1. Introduction to the scheme
  2. The scope of the regulations and consequences of non-compliance
  3. The list of approved products for drinking water
  4. Manufacturer instructions and proper use
  5. Small surface area product considerations
  6. Regulation of water treatment chemicals
  7. Specific regulatory requirements
  8. Seeking advice and record keeping

Training concludes with a 25-question multiple-choice assessment, and successful delegates receive an EUSR virtual registration card.

Who Should Attend? Everyone with a Role in Water Quality

In short – everyone. One of the key messages from the industry is that compliance isn’t just for contractors on site. From design and procurement to delivery and installation, every stakeholder has a role to play in maintaining the integrity of the UK’s drinking water supply.

If your team is involved in water infrastructure projects in any capacity, this training isn’t just advisable, it’s expected.

The Message is Clear

“This isn’t just about ticking a box,” says Catherine Storer, Executive Director at Essential Site Skills. “It’s about preventing waterborne risks, protecting public health, and making sure everyone in the supply chain knows exactly what’s required. This is vital training for a safer, smarter water industry.”
