Our Abrasive Wheels Awareness course provides learners with an understanding of the hazards associated with abrasive wheels, the precautions required before use and the principles of safe wheel selection, fitting and operation.
Who Is the Abrasive Wheels Awareness Course For?
This course is suitable for anyone who uses, changes, supervises or manages work involving abrasive wheels, including:
- Construction and maintenance operatives
- Engineers and workshop employees
- Fabricators and metalworkers
- Supervisors and managers responsible for abrasive wheel activities
No previous abrasive wheels qualification is required.
Abrasive Wheels Awareness Course Overview
The course provides learners with the knowledge needed to recognise abrasive wheel hazards, select suitable equipment and understand the checks and precautions required before and during use.
The course includes practical safe set-up, but does not include live cutting or grinding.
Learners will gain an understanding of:
- Relevant health and safety legislation
- Employer and employee responsibilities
- Common abrasive wheel hazards and causes of wheel failure
- Abrasive wheel types, applications and limitations
- Wheel markings and maximum operating speeds
- Selecting the correct wheel for the machine, material and task
- Safe handling, transportation and storage of abrasive wheels
- Pre-use checks and inspection requirements
- Guards, flanges, locking nuts and other safety components
- Correct wheel fitting and adjustment procedures
- Safe operating principles
- Risks from sparks, dust, noise and vibration
- PPE and respiratory protection requirements
- Identifying damaged, unsuitable or defective wheels and equipment
- Safe working practices when using angle grinders and cut-off saws
- Practical safe set-up of abrasive wheel equipment
