This course is aimed at people who require a formal qualification for operating a ride-on roller.

Learners with limited or no experience of operating a ride-on roller will require a three-day novice course, whereas experienced operators can attend a shorter two-day experienced worker course.

CPCS Ride on Roller (A31) Course Content

  • All pre-start, running checks and shut down procedures
  • Set roller for travel
  • Awareness of on-site hazards
  • Set the roller for compaction duties
  • Place roller in an out of service condition
  • Recognise compacted/uncompacted areas
  • Conditions that may cause instability of the roller
  • Safety procedures when working up to unsupported edges
  • Loading and unloading procedures on/off a transporter.

Entry Requirements

Learners must have passed the Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test within the last 2 years, prior to course start date.

Good understanding of spoken and written English.

One-two days learning through a mix of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises, followed by one day assessment - CPCS technical tests.

Learners will receive a Red CPCS Trained Operator Card on passing the CPCS technical tests, valid for two years.

After gaining on-site experience, you must complete an NVQ level 2 within two years to apply for the blue CPCS Competence Card which is renewable every five years.
