Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand high-pressure water jetting in the industry, recognise potential hazards, and comprehend their responsibilities as operators
  • Familiarise themselves with the manufacturer's handbook and other sources of information, risk assessment, Safe Systems of Work (SSoW), and relevant legislation, including permit requirements
  • Identify and locate major components of high-pressure water jetting equipment and explain their functions
  • Identify key controls and understand their functions
  • Perform thorough pre-operational checks in compliance with manufacturer and legislative requirements
  • Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for high-pressure water jetting and maintain it effectively
  • Choose suitable equipment based on the specific task at hand
  • Conduct safety checks at the work area, set up equipment, and establish exclusion zones
  • Establish effective communication with the pump operator and safety personnel
  • Safely prepare and operate high-pressure water jetting equipment
  • Consider environmental factors in the operation
  • Understand storage and transportation requirements for equipment
  • Execute end-of-shift and shutdown procedures
  • Safely remove exclusion zones
  • Sign off permits to work and follow lock-down procedures

Underpinning Knowledge:

Throughout the course, learners will be taught about relevant legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA), the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (MHSWR), the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), as well as topics such as Vibration, Noise, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Working at Heights (WAH), and Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR).

Safety Awareness Session:

Participants will receive a dedicated safety awareness session covering the following key topics:

  • The importance of robust risk assessments and comprehensive Safe Systems of Work (SSoW)
  • Hazards associated with high-pressure water jetting operations
  • Establishment and management of safety zones
  • Testing and marking of equipment
  • Functions of the main components of the equipment
  • Effective communication practices
  • Hand signals for safe coordination during operations

Practical Training:

Participants will engage in hands-on training that includes:

  1. Pre-start checks, covering vehicle and pump inspections
  2. Selection and donning of the correct PPE
  3. Inspection of all equipment prior to use, including pump, hoses, fittings, control valves, lances, nozzles, and additional equipment

Certification

Existing NPORS Card Holder – No (S)NVQ Held

For operators who do not currently hold the requisite (S)NVQ, a Trained Operator card will be issued which is valid for two years from the date of application. During this two year period operators will be required to register for and achieve the requisite (S)NVQ with the unit credits applicable to the categories of plant stated on their Trained Operator card.

Existing NPORS Card Holder – (S)NVQ Held

Operators who currently hold the requisite (S)NVQ with the unit credits applicable to the categories of plant stated on their NPORS card will be issued with a Competent Operator card valid for 5 years from the date of application. Operators in receipt of the Competent Operator card will also be issued with a CPD record/operator logbook. This will be an ongoing record of that operators’ continuous professional development and of their operating hours in the workplace.
