Course Information

This course is designed for those who require a formal qualification in the use of loading and unloading mobile plant.

We will conduct a learner analysis to identify the duration of training required for those with limited or no experience, whereas experienced operators can attend a one day Experienced Worker Assessment (Test Only).

Important Requirement: Learners attending this course must already hold appropriate training or certification for each category of plant they intend to load onto the transporter during the course. Evidence of operator certification may be required and copies may be retained for NPORS auditing purposes.

NPORS Plant Loader Securer (N120) Course Content

To provide knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operative in the industry
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used and relevant legislation
  • Be able to identify different types of transport, explain their purpose, the major components, basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the loading / unloading area
  • Ensure that the transporter is correctly configured in readiness for loading and unloading
  • Explain hazards that may exist in the work area and how to avoid them, e.g. underground services, overhead power lines etc
  • Agree a method of communication and use it
  • Load or direct items of plant onto and off transporting vehicle
  • Arrange and secure items of plant on transport vehicle ready for transport on the public highway
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Entry Requirements

Learners must provide evidence to support their application where required. This includes a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment touchscreen test passed within the two years prior to the NPORS card application.

Learners must also hold appropriate training or certification for each category of plant they intend to load onto the transporter during the course. Evidence of operator certification may be required and copies may be retained for NPORS auditing purposes.

A good understanding of spoken and written English is required to complete the course and assessments.

Additional NPORS Requirements

In line with NPORS assessment requirements:

  • The transporter used during training may be a rigid or articulated type.
  • A verbal explanation of pre-start checks may be accepted by the instructor where machinery is already operational.
  • The operator’s manual must be accessible for the transporter and any participating machinery.
  • The transporter must be capable of safely carrying the machinery being loaded individually or together.
  • All securing equipment must be suitable and fit for purpose.
  • The operating weight of the machinery being transported must be known.

Certification

Existing NPORS Card Holder – No (S)NVQ Held

For operators who do not currently hold the requisite (S)NVQ, a Trained Operator card will be issued which is valid for two years from the date of application. During this two year period operators will be required to register for and achieve the requisite (S)NVQ with the unit credits applicable to the categories of plant stated on their Trained Operator card.

Existing NPORS Card Holder – (S)NVQ Held

Operators who currently hold the requisite (S)NVQ with the unit credits applicable to the categories of plant stated on their NPORS card will be issued with a Competent Operator card valid for 5 years from the date of application. Operators in receipt of the Competent Operator card will also be issued with a CPD record/operator logbook. This will be an ongoing record of that operators’ continuous professional development and of their operating hours in the workplace.
