Preparing for Your First Day on a Construction Site: Training Essentials

Starting your first job on a construction site can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. The industry offers hands-on experience, career progression, and the satisfaction of building something tangible, but it also comes with serious responsibilities around health, safety, and site conduct.

Before you even step foot on-site, there are key training courses and essential preparations every newcomer should be aware of. This guide covers the basics to help you feel confident, capable, and compliant from day one.

1. CITB Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) Course

For most new entrants, especially those applying for a CSCS Labourer card, the CITB Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) course is the first step.

Why it’s essential:

  • It provides a solid understanding of how to work safely on a construction site.
  • Covers hazards, risks, responsibilities, and what to expect in real-life site scenarios.
  • It’s a mandatory requirement when applying for a CSCS Green Labourer Card (alongside the CITB HS&E test).

Tip: Book your HSA course early and keep your certificate safe, you’ll need it for your card application.

2. CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test

Often referred to as the CSCS test, this touchscreen exam tests your knowledge of health and safety best practices.

What you need to know:

  • It’s a multiple-choice test taken at a CITB-approved test centre.
  • You'll need to pass this test to apply for any CSCS card.
  • For new labourers, the Operatives Test is the standard version.

Prepare using: Official CITB revision apps or mock tests to get familiar with the question format.

3. Get Your CSCS Card

A CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card proves your qualifications and training to employers. Without one, you’ll likely be refused access to most UK construction sites.

Steps to get it:

  1. Complete the CITB HSA course.
  2. Pass the CITB HS&E test.
  3. Apply for the CSCS Labourer card via the CSCS website.

Cards typically last five years and are a gateway to entry-level site roles and further development.

4. Site-Specific Inductions

Even with your CSCS card in hand, you’ll still need a site induction before starting work. Each site has its own layout, procedures, and risks, so your employer must walk you through:

  • Emergency protocols
  • First aid points
  • Site rules and PPE requirements
  • Location-specific hazards

Note: You must complete the induction before being allowed to work, this is a legal requirement.

5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

You can’t walk onto a construction site without the correct PPE. While some items are provided by your employer, it’s worth understanding what’s typically required:

  • Hard hat
  • Hi-vis vest or jacket
  • Steel toe-capped boots
  • Gloves and safety goggles (depending on task)
  • Ear and respiratory protection (where needed)

Check: If you’re expected to bring your own PPE or if it will be supplied.

6. Optional but Recommended Training

Depending on your role or the type of site you’re joining, additional short courses might be beneficial, or even required:

Completing extra training not only boosts your confidence, but also shows initiative to employers.

7. Practical Tips Before Day One

  • Double-check your start time and location – Sites often have early starts!
  • Bring ID and copies of your training certificates (digital or printed)
  • Wear weather-appropriate clothing under your PPE
  • Pack a lunch and water – Not all sites have facilities nearby
  • Arrive early – First impressions count, and it gives you time to settle in

Why Construction? A Career Built to Last

The UK construction industry isn’t just about hard hats and high-vis, it’s one of the country’s most essential and fast-growing sectors, offering real career progression and long-term security.

Here are some quick facts:

  • Over 2.7 million people work in construction in the UK, around 1 in 10 of all jobs.
  • The industry is facing a major skills shortage, with over 225,000 additional workers needed by 2027 to meet demand.
  • Opportunities are growing in areas like sustainability, digital construction, and infrastructure.
  • Many start as labourers and progress into supervisory, technical, or managerial roles, with recognised qualifications and experience.

Whether you're looking for a hands-on role, a trade skill, or a pathway into site management, there’s never been a better time to join the industry.
