CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme – Refresher (SMSTS-R)

Course Information

The SMSTS Refresher course is for delegates who have previously passed the full Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course or subsequent refresher course, and can provide proof of attendance. It is designed to provide an understanding of responsibilities and accountability for health and safety.  Ensure you book to renew your SMSTS qualification before it expires to avoid reattending the entire five-day course.

The SMSTS Refresher course aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace.  The course includes a wide range of topics, many building on the previous five-day course programme.

Online SMSTS Refresher Course

Our 2-day Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher online course (SMSTS Refresher) is expertly facilitated via Zoom, offering a convenient path to achieving your CITB SMSTS-R qualification for remote learners.

Attendance - Full attendance of the course is mandatory to achieve a pass. Should your internet connection fail during the course for a prolonged period of time, or repeatedly, you may not be able to re-join as requested by the trainer, unless it can be re-established within 5 minutes. This is so general learning is not disturbed for other participants.

SMSTS-R Course Aims

The SMSTS refresher course aims to help site managers to:

  • improve awareness of recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issues
  • identify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation and working practices
  • implement new guidance and industry best practice
  • consolidate their understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety, welfare and the environment.

Entry Requirements

The SMSTS refresher course is only for delegates who have previously passed the five-day construction Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) or subsequent refresher course, and hold a valid SMSTS certificate. Evidence must be provided to the training provider of their eligibility. If a delegate cannot provide a copy of their certificate, the online card checker can be used to establish if a delegate currently holds a valid SMSTS certificate: https://www.citb.co.uk/cards-testing/online-card-checker/

If an individual cannot be located on the system and no evidence of their certificate can be found, they will have to attend the full Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course. Failure to attend the refresher course prior to the expiry of an existing certificate will require the delegate to re-enter the scheme by completing the full SMSTS course if they wish to remain in the scheme.

Photographic ID will be requested by the tutor at the start of the course i.e. Driving Licence/Passport.

Please be aware that it is a requirement of our Awarding Body - Site Safety Plus (CITB) that ALL delegates attending this course must read and understand English. If you do not think you will have the sufficient English skills in order to the pass the examination please contact us for advice on reasonable adjustments allowed by the Awarding Body.

Assessment & Certification

Assessment

Assessment

Assessment will be by an exam paper at the end of the course.

Exam details

The paper consists of 25 questions, selected by CITB, covering all aspects of the course. The exam paper must be taken at the end of the course.

Each paper has:

  • 18 multiple choice questions (each worth one mark)
  • 7 questions in multi-response or short written answer format (each worth two marks)

The two mark questions all relate to the seven health and safety focus areas. The higher marks recognise and reward the increased complexity of the question and response required.

The seven health and safety focus areas are founded on construction ill health, injury and fatality statistics:

  1. Working at height
  2. Vehicles/pedestrians
  3. Manual handling
  4. Asbestos
  5. Dust
  6. Noise
  7. Vibration.

The exam pass mark is 81% (26 out of 32).

The exam lasts for 35 minutes and must be completed within this time under exam conditions. Delegates are permitted to use the Construction site safety – The comprehensive guide (GE700) publication for the last 15 minutes of the exam.

The exam paper forms part of the overall assessment as to whether the delegate has successfully achieved the Site Management Safety Training Scheme-Refresher and demonstrated both knowledge of the relevant statutory provisions as well as the application of management in respect of health and safety issues.

Re-sits Procedure

If a delegate has gained between 72%–78% (23, 24 or 25 out of 32) in the exam, then they may re-sit the examination one further time.

The re-sit may take place on the same day or by attending the final day of another course within a 90-day period (the delegate is not obliged to re-do the whole course). The re-sit may be conducted in either face-to-face or a remote setting.

The training provider must make the arrangements with the delegate and ensure that the dedicated re-sit exam paper is used.

A charge may be made to the delegate. However, this fee is left entirely to the discretion of the training provider. The training provider may also recover additional costs from the delegate, which should be agreed in advance.

Subsequent arrangements will be at the delegate’s own expense.

If a delegate fails the re-sit, they must take the SMSTS refresher course again.

When a delegate scores less than 69% (22 correct answers out of 32) in the final exam, the delegate must attend the SMSTS refresher course again before they are permitted to re-sit the exam.

Certification

You will receive a CITB SMSTS digital PDF Certificate valid for 5 years.

To ensure you keep your qualification valid, you must attend the 2 day SMSTS Refresher course before the expiry date of your SMSTS certificate (there is no grace period available).
