Level 1 Award in Waste and Recycling

This Level 1 qualification is designed for learners aged 16 or over who are looking to enter employment or gain a formal qualification in the waste and recycling industry. 

Level 1 Award in Waste and Recycling - Qualification Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with the basic knowledge required by employers for entry roles within the waste and recycling industry.

The NOCN Level 1 Award in Waste and Recycling is a vocational knowledge-based qualification and as such, offers the opportunity for learners to demonstrate an achievement of the basic knowledge and understanding of waste and recycling activities. This qualification will prepare learners with the knowledge to enter employment in the waste and recycling industry in roles such as:

• Waste/recycling site operative
• Household waste recycling operative
• Transfer station operative
• Manual/mechanical street cleaner
• Compost operative
• Waste/recycling collection driver

This qualification has been developed with sector employers and representative organisations and is supported by LARAC. It supports the increasing demand for skills linked to green occupations, contributing to UK Government targets to meet net zero by 2050.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for learners undertaking this qualification. The qualification can be undertaken without any previous training or qualifications in this subject area. 

The learner must be in a position to demonstrate the requirements of the qualification and have access to required assessment opportunities and resources. 

This qualification is available to learners aged 16 years or over.

Achievement of this qualification confirms the learner has gained the knowledge expected by employers in the waste and recycling industry to:

• Gain employment in the waste and resource management industry
• Progress onto a relevant Level 2 qualification in the waste and recycling industry.
