Course Information

This npors training course is aimed at people who require the knowledge and practical skills needed to enable them to safely operate a Hoist.

NPORS Hoist (N111) Course Content

To provide knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer's handbook for the particular machine to be used
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
  • Be able to locate and identify the operating controls and explain their functions
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer's and legislative requirements
  • Ensure that hoist-way protection is in place prior to use
  • Check that all gates and safety devices function correctly, according to manufacturer's recommendations
  • Check the capacity of the hoist, loads and / or passengers
  • Check emergency lowering devices for functionality
  • Check for overhead hazards and take all necessary precautions
  • Load and unload materials into and out of the hoist safely
  • Prepare the hoist for goods and / or passengers
  • Operate the hoist to the full range of its capabilities, loaded and unloaded
  • Comply with signals
  • Safely shut down the hoist and secure it

Entry Requirements

Please note, that in all cases, operators are required to supply proof to support their application. They have to have passed the CITB health, safety & environmental touch screen test within two years prior to their application.

Good understanding of spoken and written English.

Existing NPORS Card Holder – No (S)NVQ Held

For operators who do not currently hold the requisite (S)NVQ, a Trained Operator card will be issued which is valid for two years from the date of application. During this two year period operators will be required to register for and achieve the requisite (S)NVQ with the unit credits applicable to the categories of plant stated on their Trained Operator card.

Existing NPORS Card Holder – (S)NVQ Held

Operators who currently hold the requisite (S)NVQ with the unit credits applicable to the categories of plant stated on their NPORS card will be issued with a Competent Operator card valid for 5 years from the date of application. Operators in receipt of the Competent Operator card will also be issued with a CPD record/operator logbook. This will be an ongoing record of that operators’ continuous professional development and of their operating hours in the workplace.
