What is business administration?

Business administration refers to a range of tasks which involve the management or supervision of specific operations within a business. This often involves the organisation of large amounts of physical or electronic data, but specific responsibilities will differ depending on the nature of the business. Effective administration is key for almost every organisation, and having competent business administrators ensures that daily operations are running smoothly and efficiently.

What does a business administrator do?

The roles and responsibilities of business administrators will vary depending on the nature of the business and the specifics of the working environment. Normally, the role involves the handling and organisation of data in some form or another. However, business administration is a broad title which can be applied to a number of disciplines within a company.

Any tasks that are integral to the day-to-day operations within a workplace could fall under the remit of a business administrator. Tasks could include everything from answering phonelines to data entry. This may include working across multiple different departments such as finance, human resources, sales, accounting, marketing, and many more.

Is business administration a good career?

Business administration is a great career to pursue for a number of reasons.

Firstly, given that most organisations need competent administrators in their workforce, there will always be job opportunities available. Those who have knowledge and experience of business administration can be an asset to almost any business, regardless of the sector.

Another advantage of taking on a role in business administration is the potential opportunities it opens up. Working in business admin may give you the chance to work across many different departments, allowing you to develop new experiences and transferrable skills. These experiences will look great on your CV, improving your chances of progression inside and outside of your current employment.

These opportunities to experience different departments may also give you the chance to pursue your interests in different areas of the business. This could help shape your career path going forward. Asking for more work to do with specific departments is a great way of getting your foot in the door for new roles with current employers.
