Business administration refers to a range of tasks which involve the management or supervision of specific operations within a business. This often involves the organisation of large amounts of physical or electronic data, but specific responsibilities will differ depending on the nature of the business. Effective administration is key for almost every organisation, and having competent business administrators ensures that daily operations are running smoothly and efficiently.
The roles and responsibilities of business administrators will vary depending on the nature of the business and the specifics of the working environment. Normally, the role involves the handling and organisation of data in some form or another. However, business administration is a broad title which can be applied to a number of disciplines within a company.
Any tasks that are integral to the day-to-day operations within a workplace could fall under the remit of a business administrator. Tasks could include everything from answering phonelines to data entry. This may include working across multiple different departments such as finance, human resources, sales, accounting, marketing, and many more.
Business administration is a great career to pursue for a number of reasons.
Firstly, given that most organisations need competent administrators in their workforce, there will always be job opportunities available. Those who have knowledge and experience of business administration can be an asset to almost any business, regardless of the sector.
Another advantage of taking on a role in business administration is the potential opportunities it opens up. Working in business admin may give you the chance to work across many different departments, allowing you to develop new experiences and transferrable skills. These experiences will look great on your CV, improving your chances of progression inside and outside of your current employment.
These opportunities to experience different departments may also give you the chance to pursue your interests in different areas of the business. This could help shape your career path going forward. Asking for more work to do with specific departments is a great way of getting your foot in the door for new roles with current employers.
The qualifications needed take on a role in business administration will depend on the specific workplace, job role and level of seniority. It may be possible to find entry level business administration positions with GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English, or relevant experience.
However, if you want to increase your employability chances for business administration jobs, you may want complete specific training. This will allow you to apply for more advanced roles, with more responsibilities and better pay. It will also give you the edge over other candidates when applying for jobs.
One of the most common and useful qualifications in business administration is a level 3 NVQ. NVQs allow learners to achieve a qualification through a combination of theoretical learning and experience in real working environments. This allows learners to gain experience which is relevant to what they will actually be doing day-to-day in their job. A NVQ Level 3 in business administration is roughly equivalent to 2 A-Levels.
At ESS, we provide the Level 3 Business Administration Trailblazer apprenticeship programme. This qualification is perfect for anybody taking their first steps in business administration, or may have limited experience in the role. This training will provide learners with key knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) required to successfully work as a business administrator. This learning will take 12-18 months to complete, tailored specifically for the needs of the organisation and the learner. This allows flexibility for learners in order to get the most out of the process.
To enrol on this qualification, learners must be employed in a suitable role which allows them to fulfil business administration tasks. This includes contributing to operational processes, supporting the organisational strategy and assisting in functional procedures in developing other team members. We will conduct a thorough initial assessment with learners prior to enrolment to assess their suitability for the qualification.
